Scientists, engineers and technical staff of the Institute have gathered into research teams and technological support groups based on their sharing common goals, concerns, expertise. This allows us to reach a critical size to address competitive topics.
Meanwhile, we all share common needs: synthesize materials and devices, measure their properties, understand them through modeling and theory, address societal issues although through different routes.
This explains the need to organize discussion and the sharing of expertise beyond the limits of groups and even department.
The laboratory’s experimental platforms provide machines and competencies to researchers and students of the laboratory and other nearby laboratories. By grouping the instruments together as a platform, resources can be shared and specific expertise is developed and preserved over time. This approach goes hand in hand with the development of highly sophisticated and specialized instrumentation within the research teams.
Once they have been properly trained, researchers and students can use the instruments on their own. These research platforms are also often used for educational purposes during practical experiments. Some are used under contract by industrial partners.
The 125 engineers and technicians are assigned to specialist technical groups (mechanics, electronics, elaboration, characterization, etc…) but work in close proximity with the research teams and thus make direct contributions to scientific progress.
