Abstract: One of the main challenges in understanding high-Tc cuprates is that the presence of superconductivity makes it impossible to observe “normal” (i.e. non-superconducting) electronic properties at low temperatures. I will present measurements of the spin susceptibility of YBa2Cu3Oy, which were obtained using strong magnetic fields to suppress Tc down to a few Kelvin. The results reveal that the celebrated pseudogap of the cuprates is a composite phenomenon that involves not only short-ranged antiferromagnetism at high temperatures but also charge-density wave and spin-singlet formation at low temperatures.
