Inducing micromechanical motion by optical excitation of a single quantum dot

A team of physicists succeeded in setting in motion an 18 µm long mechanical oscillator by optically exciting a single artificial atom integrated within it. This work paves the way for the emergence of interfaces linking the quantum field to the classical world.
