Charge Order and Suppression of Superconductivity in HgBa2CuO4+d at High Pressures

Charge order has been found in several high temperature superconducting cuprates in the underdoped region (hole carrier density lower that 0.16), where the physics is far from being understood, leading to claims that charge order can be at the origin of the superconductivity. We measure the evolution of superconductivity and crystal structure in monocrystals of the mercury cuprate Hg-1201. With increasing pressure, superconductivity disappears as charge ordering develops, in the over-doped region where cuprates are explained by standard Fermi liquid theory. Our measurements thus go against the claim that charge order is at the origin of superconductivity in the cuprates.
