Abstract: What happens in practice when scientists discover errors (or worse) in the scientific literature? I will explore this question through examples from my (slightly traumatic at times) experience of challenging problematic articles in nanoscience over the past 15 years. Whilst science is supposed to be self-correcting, those examples illustrate that it is at best an arduous task. I will introduce the ERC Synergy project NanoBubbles which started two years ago and which aims at better understanding how, when and why science fails to correct itself (https://nanobubbles.hypotheses.org/).
