"Density and structure of amorphous silicate at high pressure : implication for planetary interiors"

Abstract

Silicate magmas and liquid molecular compounds (NH3, CO2 ..) play a key role in the differentiation and evolution of rock and gas planetary interiors. However, studying their behavior in situ at high pressure and temperature remain challenging. Silicate glasses are good analogue to investigate the evolution of magma properties at pressures relevant for the deep Earth interior. We have developed unique tools to measure the density of amorphous material at extreme conditions of pressure as well as the evolution of their atomic structural coordination. The combination of density and atomic structure give new insight about the behavior of magmas at such conditions, a key to constrain the dynamic of planet interiors in our solar system and beyond.
