"Stochastic and non-linear processes in nano-electro-mechanical systems"

Abstract

Nano-electro-mechanical systems (NEMS) are transducers with reduced dimensions that make them ultra-sensitive sensors. They are also model systems : they can be seen as versatile platforms, being macroscopic mechanical degrees of freedom while at the same time being coupled to microscopic phenomena. In this thesis, they are first used in a purely macroscopic perspective to study the interaction between their position noise and their inherent non-linearity arising from a deformation : we see that this mechanism, that creates frequency noise without additional energy flow, depends in a subtle way on the noise dynamics. Furthermore, we explore microscopic features through energy relaxation mechanisms at the most basic level, be it in a gas in a confined geometry or via low energy excitations ubiquitous in the disordered constitutive matter of the NEMS
