"Ultrathin optical fiber research at OIST Graduate University, Japan"

Ultrathin optical fibers, with diameters of the order of the propagating light wavelength, have proven their versatility across a variety of different areas, such as dielectric particle manipulation, cold atom physics, and as optical couplers for whispering gallery resonators. The intense evanescent field at the fiber waist is one of the main advantages offered by these systems. In this talk, I will present some recent work on particle manipulation around such fibers and I will show how the intense fields can be used to explore nonlinear optics phenomena in cold atom clouds. Futher structuring of the fibers can improve coupling efficiencies and several examples will be given. Finally, the possibility to exploit some unique properties of modes in these fibers will be mentioned.
