"Antiferromagnetic domains in CoO expitaxial films grown on Pt(001)"


Antiferromagnets (AFMs) traditionally play a passive role in spintronic devices, via interfacial exchange coupling with a ferromagnet (FM). Paradoxically, they have recently attracted attention as active layer because of their invisibility. AFM do not create external magnetic fields and then interact weakly with each other. AFM materials can store information without corrupting neighbouring units no matter how high the storage density. Their intrinsic high frequency of dynamics is also a key asset for their exploitation in spintronic devices. However it does not automatically guarantee ultra-fast switching. Antiferromagnetic domains play an essential role in this context which makes their detailed understanding an important challenge. A major obstacle to a clear picture of AFM domain is in fact pased by the nature of an AFM, which is directly accessible only by a few techniques, especially in films.
We used here photoemission electron microscopy (PEEM) combined with x-ray magnetic linear dichroism (XMLD) to image different domain configurations in CoO layer. CoO was chosen for the high sensitivity of its magnetic moments to strain. During this talk, I will present local and global magnetic and crystalline structures of CoO films on Pt(001).
