"The quest for new multiferroic oxides"

Abstract :

Multiferroicity — the presence of more than one ’ferroic’ properties in a single material, is currently an area of intense experimental & theoretical scrutiny. In this talk, i briefly review the strategies used for the synthesis of such materials. Some of our results on new multiferroic oxides are also discussed. This includes the observation of a novel ’ferro-axial’ multiferroicity in Cu3Nb2O8, where the electrical polarization is oriented perpendicularly to the common plane of rotation of the spins — an observation which is not common in cycloidal multiferroics. The observation of multiferroicity in the brownmillerite Ca2Fe2O5 and preliminary results on some other potential multiferroic systems would also be presented.
