"Adventures in Low Dimensional Magnetism : Evidence for SrHo2O4 and SrDy2O4 as model J1-J2 zig-zag chain materials and an introduction to the spin tube material CsCrF4."

Abstract

This presentation will focus on low dimensional magntic materials of SrR2O4 family of frustrated rare-earth (R) and the spin-tube material CsCrF4. In the SrR2O4, despite the R sites forming a 3D array, I will demonstrate that the magnetism is dominated by 1D correlations in the c-direction.The local Ising anisotropy was determined with an electrostatic point charge model that was used to fit crystal field excitations found with inelastic neutron scattering measurements.
The combination of the strong local anisotropy and the low dimensional scattering strongly suggest that these materials are realisations of the Ising J1-J2 spin chain model at the classical limit.
CsCrF4 on the other hand, has a strongly one dimensional structure. I will report our neutron scattering results that show the presence of a one-dimensionally correlated phase prior to the condensation of three-dimensional order. I will make a comparison between the coupling that we have found from inelastic powder scattering to a recently published theoretical work.
