"Growth, structure and magnetism of ultrathin exchange-coupled double-layer"

Abstract :

When an antiferromagnetic (AFM) layer is in contact with a ferromagnetic (FM) one, the hysteresis loop of the FM layer could present a shift called exchange bias due to the exchange coupling at the interface. This phenomenon is of fundamental importance for spintronics development and is not fully understood. To get information of this mechanism at the microscopic scale, we synthesize model samples of ultrathin FM/AFM bilayers. In situ and in real time surface x-ray diffraction at the French CRG BM32 beam line at ESRF allows us to follow the growth and to precisely determine the structure. The magnetic properties are investigated ex situ by magneto-optic Kerr effect and X-ray spectroscopy techniques.

I will present this approach with mainly the example of a CoO/FePt system which is at the heart of my PhD.
