"Nanophotonic-waveguide and surface-plasmon technologies for application to telecom-network, imaging and sensing systems"

Abstract

Recent activities on photonic crystals (PCs), quantum dots (QDs) and surface plasmon (SP) for application to telecom network, medical imaging, biophotonic and mobile sensing systems have been overviewed. GaAs PC waveguides have been developed for symmetric-Mach-Zehnder (SMZ)-type, high-transmission all-optical switches by precise nanofabrication technologies and topology-optimized PC-design method. Second, wavelength- and site-controllable InAs QDs have been applied to optical nonlinear media in the SMZ switch and multi-color light sources for an optical coherence tomography by selective-area growth using a metal-mask MBE method. Third, SP air-hole arrays have been applied to a novel RGB color filter and a wide-angle optical beam steering in a mobile sensing system. A new scheme of nanophotonic waveguide and micro-fluidics-combined bio-photonic sensors will also be addressed.
